Mojang unveils autumnal 'Dappled Forest' for third 2026 Minecraft update

Mojang developers officially revealed the first features of Minecraft’s third game drop of 2026 during the Minecraft Live event held at TwitchCon. The update will introduce the Dappled Forest, an overworld biome characterized by an autumnal aesthetic that contrasts with the underground focus of the previous 'Chaos Cubed' update.

According to reporting from PC Gamer, the biome is defined by its distinct vegetation, including poplar trees with leaves in shades of red, yellow, and orange. The forest floor will be populated by new red shrubs and brown mushrooms, with dirt blocks featuring a new leaf litter texture. The introduction of poplar trees also brings a new wood set to the game, which provides players with a warm grey color palette when crafted into planks and slabs.

Beyond the flora, the Dappled Forest introduces a new structure known as abandoned camps. These sites feature tent-like shelters constructed from wool stairs, which represent a new block type being added to the game’s inventory. These camps contain chests or barrels for looting, offering players a functional alternative to the common practice of digging 3x2 holes in the ground to survive the night.

The biome currently lacks hostile mobs, marking a shift toward a more relaxed exploration experience. Reflecting on this design choice, PC Gamer noted, “I did love the addition of the pale garden and the Creaking in 2024, but sometimes you just want a cosier adventure in Minecraft, and it looks like dappled forest aims to add just that.” However, the outlet cautioned that the biome remains in the early stages of development and the potential for new, threatening mobs to be added before the final release remains possible.

At present, the Dappled Forest is not available for public play. Mojang has confirmed that the biome will be released for testing this summer, at which point further details regarding the full scope of the third 2026 update are expected to be disclosed.
