Asus officially unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally X20 on June 1, 2026, introducing significant hardware refinements to its Windows-based handheld lineup. The new model upgrades the previous 7-inch IPS display to a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED panel, which provides 600 nits of brightness in SDR and peak HDR performance of 1400 nits, according to The Verge. The display is certified VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 1000 and supports Dolby Vision, offering a wider variable refresh rate (VRR) range that now extends down to 30Hz.
The X20 model introduces several mechanical changes based on user feedback. Asus has removed the “Library” button, replacing it with an “Action” button that supports single-press screenshots and long-press video recording. Per The Verge, the device also features a transforming D-pad that switches between 4-way and 8-way input, alongside GuliKit TMR (Tunnel Magneto-Resistance) joysticks designed to combat stick drift and improve battery efficiency.
Under the hood, the X20 retains the AMD Z2 Extreme processor, with PC Gamer noting the inclusion of an NPU. The device is equipped with 24GB of 8000MT/sec LPDDR5X RAM, a 1TB SSD, and an 80Wh battery. While the internal specifications remain largely consistent with the original Ally X, the physical chassis has grown, resulting in a device that is 9mm wider, 0.5mm thicker, and 41 grams heavier.
The aesthetic design of the X20 features a translucent casing with black and gold theming, including a custom gold internal structure. According to PC Gamer, the device also incorporates button tweaks, fan adjustments, and haptic feedback improvements. The ABXY buttons are now designed to sit flush against the casing when pressed, and the bumper switches have been relocated with a longer travel distance.
Asus has confirmed that the X20 will be offered exclusively as part of a premium special-edition bundle featuring a pair of ROG XReal R1 AR glasses. While the company has not yet disclosed a final price for the package, PC Gamer analysts expect a significant retail cost, noting that the R1 glasses alone typically retail for approximately $1,000. As of June 1, Asus has not provided a specific launch date or a definitive price for the bundle, leaving the market to speculate on the final cost of this high-end enthusiast package.
