The feature film adaptation of the viral internet horror phenomenonThe Backroomshas debuted to massive commercial success, raking in $81.4 million in the U.S. during its opening weekend. According toKotaku, the performance marks a record-breaking start for distributor A24, matching the opening figures ofStar Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film’s director, Kane Parsons, has also set a record as the youngest filmmaker to ever top the domestic box office at just 20 years old.

The concept of the Backrooms originated on 4Chan in 2018 as a meme featuring an unsettling, mustard-yellow room with mismatched walls and buzzing fluorescent lights. The lore expanded rapidly on Reddit, where users defined the "liminal space" as a trap for those who "noclip" out of reality. One foundational post described the experience as follows: "If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms, where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in."

While the concept influenced various video games and television shows, the transition to film was largely driven by Parsons’ YouTube series,The Backrooms (Found Footage).Kotakureports that Parsons, then only 16, created a series of VHS-style, first-person horror shorts using Blender and Adobe After Effects. His work introduced the narrative of government researchers attempting to map the impossible, dangerous dimensions of the Backrooms.

Parsons’ YouTube channel eventually featured 15 shorts that established deep lore and a distinct visual style.Kotakunoted that his technical proficiency and understanding of horror elements allowed him to transition from a teenage content creator to a major Hollywood director, effectively bridging the gap between niche internet creepypasta and mainstream box office performance. The film's success highlights the growing influence of internet-born horror aesthetics on modern cinematic distribution.
