Valve has officially announced that its local network game streaming app, Steam Link, is now available on the Apple Vision Pro. This move enables users to wirelessly play traditional 2D games from their Steam libraries within the Vision Pro’s virtual environment.
It is important to note that the app currently only supports running standard desktop games on a virtual display; it does not support streaming VR titles. While there has been speculation that this could pave the way for future SteamVR support, Valve has yet to make any official announcements regarding VR gaming on the Vision Pro.
Steam Link was previously available on other Apple devices, including Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Users can pair controllers with these devices to stream games running on Windows, Linux, or other PCs via a local network. This port provides Vision Pro users with an official, more stable, and convenient solution compared to third-party tools like ALVR.
An Upgraded Immersive Gaming Experience
Interested users can currently access the app via Apple’s TestFlight platform. According to Valve’s official documentation, this version supports streaming at up to 4K resolution and allows users to dynamically adjust the curvature of the display interface in panoramic mode.
At its launch, the Vision Pro faced criticism from some users for difficulties in connecting to external gaming hardware and the limitations of Apple’s closed ecosystem. With the addition of Steam Link, the Vision Pro’s gaming capabilities have seen a significant improvement. Although the setup process remains less intuitive than that of dedicated VR headsets on the market, this update undoubtedly enhances the device's utility as a personal entertainment terminal.
