Ragnarok Console Project announcement

Publishers Gravity and Daweon Game Media Lab, in partnership with developer Waycoder, officially announced the Ragnarok Console Project on Saturday. According to Gematsu, the game is currently in development for a broad multi-platform release, targeting the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, the upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

The title marks a significant expansion of the Ragnarok franchise, which originated with the landmark MMORPG Ragnarok Online. The developers claim the intellectual property has been enjoyed by over 100 million players globally.

A Narrative of Consequence

The game is set in a reimagined version of the familiar Ragnarok universe. According to the game's Steam page, players will navigate a world on the brink of collapse, facing a narrative focused on moral complexity rather than traditional tropes of good and evil. The gameplay features a class system that includes familiar roles such as Knights, Mages, Priests, and Hunters.

The project’s narrative tone is established in a prologue shared by the developers, which centers on the disappearance of a powerful, nation-shaking item. The source material quotes a character reflecting on failure, stating: “Failure isn’t the end. In most cases… it’s closer to the beginning.”

Players will explore diverse environments ranging from desolate deserts and ruins to mysterious research facilities. The central conflict involves dimensional distortions and the secrets surrounding the "Heart of Ymir," which are described as slowly consuming the world. The developers emphasize that the game will be built on a system of choice and consequence, promising a journey from which there is no turning back.
