Following the immense critical acclaim of the second season, officials have officially announced that 'Frieren: Beyond Journey's End' will return for its third season in October 2027. As the narrative progresses, Frieren and her party will face their most formidable adversary yet: Macht of El Dorado.
According to reports from Polygon, Macht is one of the 'Seven Sages of Destruction' who served under the Demon King. While most of the Seven Sages have already fallen at the hands of the Hero of the South and Himmel’s party, Macht remains one of the last two survivors—a figure Frieren herself considers the most dangerous of them all.
An Unbeatable Curse
Macht’s power stems from his signature curse magic, 'Di Agolze.' As described, this magic transforms anything it touches into indestructible gold. Unlike previous battles, this curse is considered both irreversible and unavoidable, having once led to the total annihilation of Denken’s hometown, Weise.
Macht is not your typical demon. He once formed a peculiar symbiotic relationship with the Lord of Weise, Gluck, in an attempt to understand humanity by mimicking their emotions. However, because demons inherently lack empathy, this experiment ultimately ended in tragedy, with Macht turning the entire city and its surrounding regions into gold.
To contain Macht’s power, the Continental Magic Association once assembled a group of powerful mages, but they ultimately chose to seal him away rather than attempt to defeat him outright. The resulting 'Great Barrier of El Dorado' requires annual maintenance by the Association to prevent the golden curse from spreading further.
As Frieren’s party continues their journey toward the Northern Plateau, and with Denken determined to break the curse upon his homeland, a confrontation between the two sides has become inevitable. Studio Madhouse will return to handle production for the third season, which is expected to deliver even more intense battle sequences and profound character interactions.
