Google quietly rolled out an AI dictation app called "Google AI Edge Eloquent" on iOS this Monday. The app prioritizes offline processing, positioning itself as a direct competitor to tools like Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow.
Once users download the app and the underlying Gemma-based speech recognition model, they can dictate text without an internet connection. The app provides real-time transcription and includes intelligent filtering; when a user pauses recording, the system automatically strips out filler words like "um" and "ah" while polishing the text.
Offline Processing and Intelligent Editing
Eloquent offers a variety of text-processing options. After transcription, users can tap buttons such as "Bullet points," "Formal," "Concise," or "Detailed" to instantly reformat their text. The app functions entirely offline, ensuring no data is uploaded to the cloud. However, if users choose to enable cloud mode, the system leverages the Gemini model for more advanced text optimization.
To improve recognition accuracy, Eloquent allows users to import keywords, common names, and specific terminology from their Gmail accounts. Users can also manually add custom vocabulary lists. The app includes a built-in history feature, allowing users to search past transcripts and view statistics such as speaking rate and total word count.
In its App Store description, Google states: "Eloquent is an advanced dictation app designed to bridge the gap between natural speech and professional text. Unlike traditional dictation software that simply transcribes word-for-word, Eloquent uses AI to capture the user's true intent, automatically removing verbal fillers and grammatical errors to produce clean, accurate copy."
Although the app is currently available only on iOS, Google has confirmed on its updated store page that a companion iOS keyboard is coming soon. The app is currently free to download.
