X has rolled out a new feature called "Cashtag" that allows users to view live financial data for stocks and cryptocurrencies within their social media timelines, according to a report by The Block.
Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, announced on Tuesday that the feature is currently available to iPhone users in the United States and Canada. The update enables users to track market movements without leaving the app.
When a user searches for a specific asset or a contract address, the platform now automatically suggests related stocks or cryptocurrencies as a Cashtag. Users can tap these tags to view posts mentioning the asset alongside a live price chart, Bier stated.
In Canada, the feature includes a built-in button that links to the brokerage Wealthsimple, allowing users to trade assets directly from the X interface.
"This ensures that you're always matched to the chatter for the right stock or token," Bier said. He added that Cashtags represent the "first step" in the company's goal to become a primary destination for the finance and crypto communities.
No direct trading on platform
Despite the integration of financial data, X will not function as a brokerage or execute trades itself. Bier previously clarified that the company's focus remains on building financial data tools and links rather than acting as a financial intermediary.
The rollout follows recent comments from Bier suggesting X might launch tools to improve the user experience following a difficult year for the crypto market.
This move aligns with Elon Musk's broader strategy to transform X into a "super app." Musk recently indicated that the company plans to launch early public access to X Money, a digital wallet for peer-to-peer payments, in April.
Recent hiring trends at X also support this expansion into finance. The company recently appointed Benji Taylor, formerly of Aave and Base, as its head of design, and has previously recruited engineers specifically for the X Money payments platform.
