Microsoft has begun testing a modernized version of the Windows 11 Run menu within its new Experimental Channel. The update aims to refresh the legacy interface while maintaining the high-speed performance expected by power users.
According to reporting from The Verge, the refreshed Run menu is currently rolling out to Windows 11 Insiders. The redesign includes support for dark mode and a more modern interface that aligns with current design standards.
BleepingComputer reports that the new dialog is available in preview build 26300.8346. This version is designed to match the Fluent Design language used throughout Windows 11.
Faster than the legacy dialog
While modernizing software often results in slower performance, Microsoft claims this new iteration is actually faster than the original version. BleepingComputer notes that this is a notable development, as modern software counterparts frequently suffer from increased latency.
The Run dialog, which users access via the Win + R shortcut, has been a staple of the Windows operating system since the Windows 95 era. It allows users to launch tools, open file paths, or execute commands without navigating through File Explorer.
Microsoft addressed the difficulty of updating such a fundamental tool in a recent developer blog post. The company stated, "When we set out on creating the new experience, we knew the existing dialog was fast. We also knew we needed to be sure we deeply understood how you all used it. Modernize, be opinionated, and evolve it."
To ensure the update did not degrade the user experience, Microsoft implemented telemetry to monitor usage and "time-to-show" metrics. The company noted that this data-driven approach helped guide the design process for the new interface.
