Microsoft hikes Surface device prices as RAM shortage hits hardware costs

Microsoft is raising prices across its Surface lineup, with several flagship models seeing much larger jumps due to a global shortage of RAM.

The 13-inch Surface Pro 11 and the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7 now start at $1,499, a $500 increase from their original $999 price point, according to reports from Windows Central.

These hikes follow a previous shift where Microsoft discontinued lower-cost configurations. Last year, the company stopped selling the $999 versions of these devices, opting instead to push $1,199 models with higher storage capacities.

Rising costs for Surface lineup

The price increases extend to the smaller, more recent additions to the family. The 12-inch Surface Pro has climbed from $799 to $1,049, while the 13-inch Surface Laptop has risen from $899 to $1,199.

Premium configurations are also seeing massive jumps. A fully spec'd 15-inch Surface Laptop featuring the Snapdragon X Elite, 64GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage now carries a $3,649 price tag. This puts the Windows machine hundreds of dollars above a 16-inch MacBook Pro with comparable specifications.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop's base price has also moved from $1,299 to $1,599.

These price adjustments place Microsoft in a difficult position against Apple's hardware. The company's $599 MacBook Neo is currently outperforming rival Windows laptops in the market.

Windows Central suggests Microsoft may reveal new Surface hardware later this spring or summer. These upcoming devices could match or even exceed the current high prices of the existing lineup.
