Google has officially launched a new desktop search application for Windows, expanding its utility beyond the web browser to include local computer files. The app, which functions similarly to macOS's Spotlight feature, is now available globally in English for users running Windows 10 or newer, according to a report from The Verge.
Users can trigger the interface using the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut. Once active, the tool enables simultaneous searches across the internet, local device storage, and Google Drive. The application also includes specialized views for images and an integrated 'AI Mode' to streamline information retrieval.
AI-driven visual search capabilities
The software incorporates advanced visual tools to assist with desktop workflows. According to The Verge, the app allows users to utilize Google Lens or share their screens to ask specific questions about the content currently displayed on their monitors.
While the rollout is currently limited to the Windows platform, rumors suggest Google may be expanding its AI presence to other operating systems. The Verge reported that the company is testing a Gemini-specific app for macOS, a move that would place Google in direct competition with existing desktop AI tools from Anthropic and OpenAI.
Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding a potential release for Linux or macOS. The new Windows app can be downloaded directly from Google's official website.
