Blackmagic Design is expanding the capabilities of its DaVini Resolve software by introducing a dedicated Photo page designed to bring professional cinema color grading to still photography.

The new update allows photographers to access the same advanced toolset used by Hollywood colorists for static images. The software integrates familiar photography adjustments like white balance and exposure with the platform's high-end node-based grading engine.

Advanced grading for photographers

Unlike traditional layer-based photo applications, the Photo page utilizes a node-based workflow. This allows users to build complex grades using primary color correction, curves, qualifiers, and Power Windows.

Blackmagic Design states that the software provides professional-grade scopes, including waveform, vectorscope, and histogram, to ensure color accuracy in still images. The update also incorporates AI-driven tools and Resolve FX to automate subject isolation and background effects.

For professional workflows, the software offers native RAW support for major camera brands including Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, and iPhone ProRAW. The engine processes images at source resolution up to 32K, or over 400 megapixels, without being restricted by project timeline settings.

Users can also perform non-destructive transforms, such as cropping, rotating, and reframing, without altering the original sensor data. The system utilizes GPU acceleration to speed up the processing of large image albums.

Blackmagic Design also integrated Blackmagic Cloud into the workflow. This allows photographers, colorists, and retouchers to collaborate on the same project and share albums, metadata, and grades in real time from any location.
