Netflix has revealed its next major sci-fi venture, The Boroughs, a series produced by the Duffer Brothers that trades teenage bike rides for golf carts.
Created by Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews, the show follows a group of retirees living in a picturesque community who must defend their home against a sinister otherworldly threat.
A veteran ensemble cast
The series features a high-profile cast including Geena Davis, Alfred Molina, Alistair Woodard, Bill Pullman, Clarke Peters, and Denis O’Hare.
Early descriptions of the series liken the concept to a blend of Stranger Things and the 1985 Ron Howard film Cocoon. The plot centers on Sam Cooper, played by Molina, as he joins the community and encounters supernatural occurrences.
While the show shares DNA with the hit Netflix series, the protagonists differ significantly in age. Unlike the coming-of-age themes of Stranger Things, The Boroughs focuses on characters utilizing decades of life experience to confront an alien presence.
"While the characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things — they ride golf carts instead of bikes — the spirit is very much the same," the Duffer Brothers said in a statement.
They added that the story explores themes of belonging and growing up regardless of age, promising a mix of adventure, comedy, and horror.
The series is scheduled to begin streaming on Netflix on May 21.
