Bungie announced a series of major changes to Destiny 2's public destinations as part of the upcoming Monument of Triumph update, according to pcgamer.com. The update, scheduled for June 9, signals a return to the game's roots by incentivizing players to congregate in open-world patrol zones.
For years, the developer has focused heavily on structured campaigns and cooperative playlists, which the outlet reported led to patrol zones feeling neglected. In an effort to reverse this trend, the studio is overhauling how these areas function by integrating them into the current gear paradigm.
"Destinations have always been a foundational part of Destiny, whether you touch down briefly for a Public Event, roam areas for patrols and secrets, or find various factions moving against each other," Bungie stated in its Dev Insights blog. "With the return of the Director, we felt now was a better time than ever to thrust players back into these frontiers."
Introducing Distortions
To drive foot traffic back to these expansive areas, Bungie is introducing a new feature called "Distortions" across seven destinations. These events will trigger on an hourly rotation, tearing the sky open to empower local enemies and offer higher-tier loot to players who complete the resulting challenges.
According to pcgamer.com, these zones will now feature updated loot pools similar to those found in Portal playlists. Players can expect to find fan-favorite gear with refreshed perks and set bonuses. For instance, activities in the Cosmodrome will now drop retuned Seventh Seraph weaponry, while Nessus will host Vex-themed gear like the Pluperfect rifle.
Bungie noted that the goal of these changes is to revitalize the shared social aspects of the game. By offering clear incentives and rewards, the developer hopes to encourage Guardians to work together on shared goals in the wild, mirroring the collaborative nature of the game’s early years.
The update also includes the return of the Sparrow Racing League and a variety of reprised weapons, serving as a final content push before the game enters an indefinite development hiatus.
