Official range figures for Rivian’s new R2 electric SUV have surfaced. According to EPA certification documents leaked on a Rivian enthusiast forum, the vehicle is rated for 335 miles of range when outfitted with 21-inch wheels.
Rivian had previously estimated that the SUV would achieve at least 330 miles under similar configurations. These leaked documents provide a more precise performance benchmark for the highly anticipated mid-size SUV.
The Impact of Wheel Configuration on Range
The test data also shed light on performance when using 20-inch wheels. While smaller wheels typically reduce rolling resistance and extend range, the R2’s results show that opting for 20-inch all-terrain tires actually drops the official range to 314 miles. This decrease is primarily attributed to the higher rolling resistance inherent in all-terrain tire compounds.
Technical specifications indicate that the R2 is equipped with an 86.8 kWh battery pack, slightly lower than the 87.9 kWh figure previously cited by Rivian. The vehicle supports DC fast charging up to 210 kW and 11.5 kW Level 2 AC charging, and it comes standard with an improved heat pump system that outperforms the one found in the R1 series.
Currently, the Rivian R2 Performance trim is priced at $57,990, representing the only version available at launch. A more budget-friendly R2 Premium trim, priced at $53,990, is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2026.
Rivian plans to roll out additional configuration options in the future, at which point more EPA range data for smaller wheel setups featuring all-season tires will become available. Meanwhile, an entry-level version with a smaller battery pack and a starting price of $45,000 is not expected to debut until the second half of 2027.
