Instacart has acquired Colombia-based grocery technology firm Instaleap to expand its enterprise platform into international markets, the company announced Tuesday. The deal signals a strategic shift toward global software deployment.
The financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed.
Founded in 2019, Instaleap provides a global fulfillment solutions platform. The company helps retailers streamline and scale their online operations across nearly 30 countries, spanning Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.
Because Instacart’s primary delivery service is currently restricted to North America, the acquisition provides a pathway to international growth. The company can now enter new regions by providing software rather than building out physical delivery fleets and driver networks.
Driving global retail technology
Instacart has increasingly invested in retail technology and fulfillment services over the last several years. Its Storefront Pro commerce platform already powers the e-commerce operations of more than 380 grocers, including Costco, Aldi, Publix, and Sprouts.
The company’s ecosystem also includes Carrot Ads, a service that allows more than 310 retailers to build and scale their online and in-store advertising businesses. This advertising arm allows retailers to leverage consumer data to drive sales.
Instaleap will initially operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Instacart. The company plans to expand its proprietary enterprise technology to Instaleap’s existing partners over time.
“We see a meaningful opportunity to expand internationally through an enterprise-led strategy that empowers retailers across the globe to meet the evolving omnichannel needs of their customers,” said Ryan Hamburger, Chief Commercial Officer at Instacart.
Hamburger stated that the addition of Instaleap’s technology and international expertise will allow Instacart to "accelerate our international expansion and better serve retailers and consumers around the world."
Instaleap co-founder and CEO Antonio dos Santos Nunes highlighted the importance of the merger for the Colombian firm's growth.
“We’ve built our platform with a deep focus on the unique needs of grocery retailers across diverse international markets,” Nunes said in a press release.
Nunes added that joining Instacart enables the firm to scale its impact using the support of a partner committed to retailer success.
