Google services subscription growth

Alphabet announced Wednesday that Google added 25 million paid subscriptions to its services during the first quarter, according to a report from TechCrunch.

The company's total number of paid subscriptions now stands at 350 million, an increase from the 325 million reported in the final quarter of 2025. Growth was primarily driven by YouTube and Google One, the company's cloud storage and subscription service.

While the earnings report did not provide specific subscriber counts for Gemini, access to advanced AI features is now bundled within Google One plans. This integration links the growth of the storage service directly to Google's AI expansion.

YouTube ad revenue misses estimates

Despite the surge in subscriptions, YouTube's advertising revenue fell slightly short of Wall Street expectations. The outlet reported that analysts expected $9.99 billion in YouTube ad revenue for the quarter, but the actual figure reached $9.88 billion.

This dip follows a trend where users switch to ad-free YouTube Premium plans, a move that reduces the pool of viewable advertisements. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai previously told analysts that investors should evaluate YouTube's business through a combination of both advertising and subscription revenue.

Google did report growth in its enterprise sector, noting a 40% quarter-over-quarter increase in paid monthly active users for Gemini. The company has not yet released specific user numbers for the Gemini chatbot, which previously surpassed 750 million monthly active users.
