Tom Duff Gordon, the vice president of international policy at Coinbase, has left the cryptocurrency exchange to join OpenAI.
Duff Gordon will take on the role of head of EMEA Policy at the AI research firm, according to a Coinbase spokesperson via email.
He departs Coinbase after nearly four years with the U.S.-listed platform. Prior to his tenure in crypto, Duff Gordon spent eight and a half years as a banker at Credit Suisse.
Regulatory expertise
Duff Gordon has established himself as an expert on cryptocurrency regulations. He recently criticized U.K. banks for blocking millions of customers from accessing compliant services by failing to distinguish between high-risk operators and FCA-registered firms.
OpenAI's expansion into the EMEA region likely requires similar regulatory navigation. The company faces increasing scrutiny over data privacy and the legal frameworks governing large language models across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
