The 'Schemers' party of Critical Role Campaign 4 delivered the series' most impressive combat performance to date during the recent episode, 'The Point of No Return.' Moving away from the direct martial confrontation seen in previous episodes, the group utilized high-level utility magic to resolve a standoff in the Dol-Makjar sewers.

Players Taliesin Jaffe, Luis Carazo, Marisha Ray, and Liam O’Brien navigated a scenario involving the Crow Keepers and a dangerous mold spirit. The encounter required the group to rescue a missing student, Desmodus Blix, without exposing their high-profile identities to the city's authorities.

Strategic use of illusion and magic

Rather than charging into the fray, the group leveraged the character Murray's Tremorsense to map out enemy positions. Bolaire, played by Jaffe, used the Phantas and Force spell to create a phantom squad of guards. This illusion, paired with Hal's use of Thaumaturgy and Azune's physical distractions, successfully lured several enemies away from the main conflict.

To disrupt the ongoing deal between the Crow Keepers and the mold spirit, the players used a Mage Hand to throw a dagger into the room. This tactical move incited a fight between the two enemy factions, providing the window needed to extract Blix.

According to reports from Polygon, this approach stands in stark contrast to the 'Soldiers' or 'Seekers' groups, which have relied more on traditional combat. The Schemers' reliance on creative spellcasting allowed them to bypass the lethal 'Sneak Attack' damage typical of the Crow Keepers' rogue-style combatants.

This episode also highlighted the high stakes for the characters' civilian lives. Because characters like Bolaire and Hal hold prominent positions in Dol-Makjar, any failure in stealth could lead to political repercussions from powerful houses like Halovar or Tachonis.
