DataDog has open-sourced pg_tracing, a PostgreSQL extension designed to generate server-side spans for distributed tracing operations. This tool provides granular observability into internal database functions, execution plans, and transaction commits within PostgreSQL 14 through 16. The extension supports exporting trace data via OTLP JSON format or direct consumption through SQL views.
