From April Fool's Joke to Track Legend: BMW M3 Touring to Compete in Nürburgring 24 Hours

Once viewed primarily as family haulers, station wagons are undergoing a "performance revolution." BMW has officially announced that it will field a race car based on the M3 Touring to compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, challenging one of the world's most grueling endurance races.

From "Grocery Getter" to Track Beast

In the evolution of the modern automotive industry, the positioning of the station wagon is undergoing a fascinating transformation. In the once-popular U.S. market, this vehicle segment has become polarized: it is either a "crossover" version with raised ground clearance and protective cladding, designed to handle light off-roading and complex urban parking, or a high-performance "wolf in sheep's clothing," packing over 600 horsepower (approx. 447 kW) and capable of sending passenger adrenaline levels soaring under extreme lateral G-forces.

Although BMW has introduced the 717-horsepower M5 Touring plug-in hybrid to the U.S. market, the highly anticipated, lightweight M3 Touring has remained unavailable in North America. However, BMW's latest move has instantly made this wagon the focus of global enthusiasts: BMW has officially announced that it will send an M3 Touring to compete in the famous Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), using it as a springboard to enter the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May.

Started as a Joke, Ended on the Track

Interestingly, this ambitious racing project originated from an "April Fool's joke" last year. At the time, BMW released a prank post about an M3 Touring race car, which unexpectedly triggered a massive response from the fan community. This overwhelming positive feedback eventually prompted BMW's Munich headquarters to officially approve the budget, turning the joke into reality.

It is reported that this M3 Touring race car is essentially a "wagon version" of the M4 GT3 EVO. To meet the demands of track competition, engineers have deeply modified it; while its core technical specifications remain highly consistent with the GT3 race car, the body length has been slightly increased, and it is equipped with a taller rear wing to provide greater downforce.

A Unique Choice Under Racing Regulations

Choosing to participate in the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS) is no coincidence. According to FIA GT3 regulations, participating models must be developed based on a two-door coupe platform, which directly excludes four-door sedans or five-door wagons from competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, or the 24 Hours of Spa.

As one of the world's most grueling endurance races, the Nürburgring 24 Hours offers a unique track environment and relatively flexible entry rules, providing an excellent stage for the M3 Touring. It is worth mentioning that F1 World Champion Max Verstappen will also be participating in this event. At that time, this wagon, evolved from a "joke," will compete against top-tier GT3 race cars in the "Green Hell," writing a new chapter in the track legend of the station wagon.
