BMW has officially unveiled the next generation of its electric lineup with the return of the i3 sedan according to reporting by The Verge. This vehicle represents the second wave of production based on the new Neue Klasse architecture following the iX3. The announcement confirms the strategy to expand beyond the initial iX3 crossover model into the sedan market with significant updates.

Performance figures suggest this sedan will rival high-performance combustion rivals on paper. Power output reaches 469 horsepower with a peak torque of 476 pound-feet. These numbers place the output closer to the current M3 than the standard 330i despite the added weight of the battery pack.

Range estimates indicate a maximum of 440 miles on a single charge for the base model. Charging infrastructure supports rates up to 400kW to replenish over 200 miles in just 10 minutes. The battery pack reportedly utilizes a capacity similar to the 108.7kWh unit found in the iX3.

Sebastian Kroes, BMW’s head of interior design, described the aesthetic philosophy during the reveal. He stated the iX3 emphasized verticality while the i3 focuses on horizontality. This design choice is most visible in the light strip running across the front fascia.

Under the skin, the platform employs cylindrical cells arranged in a cell-to-pack configuration. Engineers removed permanent magnets to eliminate rare earth material dependencies entirely. This motor design allows the car to coast without requiring a mechanical disconnect system.

The interior features a windshield-spanning Panoramic Vision display and a suspended 17.9-inch touchscreen. Capacitive touch surfaces on the steering wheel control cruise functions without physical buttons. The wheelbase has grown by one point nine inches to provide a significantly more spacious cabin.

Software architecture relies on onboard superbrains from Qualcomm and Samsung for processing. Large language models will enhance the voice assistant to handle complex cabin operations. Amazon integration enables Alexa Plus for voice-activated restaurant reservations and reviews.

Automotive analysts note this is not a direct reboot of the 2013 to 2022 hatchback. The name serves as a retcon for the new platform rather than a continuation of the previous design. BMW credits the original for establishing EV intentions but shares little architectural DNA.

Manufacturing is scheduled to commence in August of this year at the primary facility. Pricing is projected to start near 60,000 dollars based on the iX3 benchmark in the United States. Further details regarding exact availability dates remain unconfirmed by the manufacturer.

Market observers will watch how this sedan competes against established rivals like Tesla in the near future. The integration of advanced AI features may set a new standard for automotive user interfaces globally. Future models will likely expand on the single-motor and quad-motor options mentioned today.
