Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has publicly criticized Joseph Sanberg, the founder of fintech startup Aspiration Partners, in a letter submitted ahead of Sanberg's sentencing.
According to TechCrunch, Ballmer submitted the letter to the court as part of the sentencing process for Sanberg, who recently pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud.
Sanberg' and his former company, Aspiration Partners, were part of a high-profile group of tech investments. The Department of Justice announced in August 2025 that Sanberg pleaded guilty to defrauding multiple investors and lenders.
In the letter, Ballmer expressed the personal and financial toll of the fraud. He told the court, "I was duped and feel silly."
Ballmer’s legal representatives stated that the investor has suffered significant losses and has faced public vilification due to his association with the fraudulent scheme.
Legal consequences for Sanberg
Each count of wire fraud against Sanberg carries a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The sentencing for Sanberg is scheduled to take place this Monday.
TechCrunch reports that while Silicon Valley often tolerates 'founder exaggeration' during pitches, the Sanberg case represents a crossing of legal lines that resulted in criminal charges.
