The FBI has launched a formal investigation into the deaths and disappearances of at least 11 American scientists and researchers linked to NASA, nuclear research, and classified defense programs, according to a report by Fortune.

The group of researchers includes individuals connected to space defense technologies currently being used by private companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin. The cases date back as far as 2022.

On Monday, the House Oversight Committee demanded answers from four federal agencies regarding the string of incidents. Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.) sent letters to the FBI, the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and NASA.

“If the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets,” the committee stated in the letters.

Comer told reporters that the pattern of deaths is unlikely to be a coincidence. “Once you see the facts, it would suggest that something sinister could be happening and it would be a national security concern,” Comer said.

Federal response

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration is working with the FBI to review the cases and identify commonalities. President Trump also commented on the situation, noting that some of the deceased were "very important people."

FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News that the bureau is searching for connections to classified information or foreign actors. “If there’s any connections that lead to nefarious conduct or conspiracy, this FBI will make the appropriate arrest,” Patel said.

In a statement to Fortune, the FBI confirmed it is leading the effort and working with the Department of Energy and local law enforcement to find answers. The bureau is specifically looking for links to individuals with access to classified defense data.

NASA stated it is cooperating with relevant agencies regarding the missing scientists, though the agency has not yet released specific details regarding the nature of the investigations.
