New revelations have uncovered a direct link between neo-Nazi operative Andrew Auernheimer and a sophisticated online influence network connected to billionaire Peter Thiel.
Investigations into the network reveal that Auernheimer served as a vital bridge between far-right subcultures and political operatives working for Thiel’s business interests.
Jeff Giesea, an investor who ran companies on behalf of Thiel, previously authored a paper for the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence journal titled ‘It’s Time to Embrace Memetic Warfare.’
Giesea’s paper proposed using 'sockpuppet' accounts and harassment campaigns to undermine adversaries. He specifically cited far-right activist Charles C. Johnson as a key contributor to these digital tactics.
Digital warfare and Palantir
The tactics described by Giesea mirror a 2011 operation uncovered during a breach of the US intelligence contractor HBGary Federal. Leaked documents from that breach showed a plan to use similar methods against trade unions and journalists.
That 2011 operation involved the participation of Palantir, the data surveillance firm co-founded by Peter Thiel. While Palantir suspended employees involved in the HBGary incident and issued an apology, the breach exposed a pre-existing repertoire of coordinated harassment and disinformation.
According to participants, the infrastructure for these operations relied on white supremacist platforms, including the neo-Nazi publication Daily Stormer. These sites were covertly funded by Giesea.
These platforms functioned as testing grounds for the 'memetic warfare' tactics later presented as strategic tools to NATO-affiliated journals. Auernheimer acted as the primary link connecting these extremist digital spaces to the broader network of Thiel-linked operatives.
