South Korean game developer XLGAMES has officially announced that it is pulling the plug on its survival shooter, 'The Cube, Save Us,' which only launched on March 18. The game’s lifespan from release to cancellation lasted a mere three weeks.
Despite cracking the top ten most-wishlisted games during Steam Next Fest last October, the title’s actual performance was dismal. According to GameSpot, the game holds a 'Mostly Negative' rating on Steam with less than 30% positive reviews, and it peaked at only 5,177 concurrent players on its launch day.
Poor Market Performance and Shutdown
As time went on, the game's daily active user count plummeted to just a few hundred. Lacking market competitiveness, the free-to-play title failed to build a stable community and received virtually no professional critical coverage on major review aggregators like Metacritic.
Player feedback consistently pointed to fundamental quality issues. Steam reviews highlighted sluggish controls, uninspired combat mechanics, and an aggressive reliance on microtransactions, all of which drove players away in droves. One player bluntly stated in a review, "The game doesn't even have the basics of optimization down."
XLGAMES confirmed the news in an official Steam announcement. In a brief statement, the development team wrote, "It is with a heavy heart that we share this unfortunate news: the story of 'The Cube, Save Us' will come to an end on May 8, 2026."
While the announcement did not provide specific reasons for the shutdown, the developer promised that automatic refunds would be issued for all purchases made through Steam, with the process scheduled to begin on April 9.
