Sony Pictures kicked off the annual CinemaCon trade show in Las Vegas with a massive presentation featuring several highly anticipated sequels and original projects.

The studio showcased major updates for the Spider-Verse franchise, including a new release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Sony moved the release date up one week to June 18, 2027, and announced the film will use a tall aspect ratio to optimize IMAX screens.

According to The Playlist, the footage shown was "beautifully composed" and "smart and funny."

Horror fans received a first look at a new Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger. The trailer features star Austin Abrams navigating a zombie outbreak in a snowy landscape.

Cregger told attendees he intends to focus on the "resource management" and atmosphere found in the original games. Recent test screening reports suggest the 90-minute film will feel like a "horror version of Mad Max: Fury Road."

Major updates for Zelda and Spider-Man

Sony also provided a production update for the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, scheduled for May 7, 2027. The studio confirmed that director Wes Ball has wrapped filming on the project.

Details regarding the cast remain under wraps, as the studio has not yet identified the actors playing Link and Zelda.

For the Spider-Man live-action franchise, Sony presented an extended look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day, arriving July 31. The footage featured a fight scene that The Playlist described as "very grounded" and reminiscent of the Sam Raimi era.

Other notable announcements included a new title for the Jumanji franchise, Jumanji: Open World, set for a Christmas Day release. The film will see the video game characters enter the real world.

In a surprising move, Sony teased The Social Reckoning, a sequel to The Social Network. The film, directed by Aaron Sorkin, will star Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg.

IndieWire reported that Strong's performance in the trailer was "inspired," describing his portrayal as "gripping."

The slate also included Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun, starring Jenna Ortega, and the mecha epic Grandgear from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki.
