Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a global price increase for the PlayStation 5 console lineup and PlayStation Portal. Starting April two, standard and Pro models will see hikes ranging from $100 to $200 in the United States. This marks the second major price adjustment in the US market since the system launched in 2020.

The standard model sees a $100 increase to $649.99 for the disc version. The PlayStation 5 Pro model faces the steepest increase from its launch price at $899.99. The Digital Edition follows the same pattern, rising to $599.99 across North America.

Prices are rising globally, not just in the United States. Europe, the United Kingdom, and Japan will see equivalent increases in local currency. This follows similar hikes in other regions earlier this year according to Polygon.

The PlayStation Portal remote player also gets a price hike alongside the console. It increases by $50 to $249.99 in the United States effective the same day. The device launched in 2023 at a lower price point before this adjustment.

Sony cites global economic pressures as the primary driver for the decision. Isabelle Tomatis stated the move ensures continued high-quality experiences for players. The company acknowledged the impact on the community during their internal evaluation.

This is the second price increase for the console in the US market. The first hike occurred last August, raising the standard model to $549.99. The original launch price was $499.99 in November 2020.

Analysts predicted hardware costs would rise due to persistent inflation and tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. Component shortages also contribute to the manufacturing cost pressure across the supply chain. Other manufacturers like Microsoft and Nintendo face similar economic headwinds.

Consumers may delay hardware purchases or seek refurbished units to avoid the sticker shock. This trend signals a shift in how gaming hardware is priced post-launch compared to previous generations. It reflects broader challenges in the consumer electronics sector facing raw material costs.

The industry watches for how sales volume responds to these new price points in the coming quarter. Future generations of consoles might start at higher base prices given the current trajectory. Supply chain stability remains a key variable for pricing strategies moving forward.

Gaming hardware costs have historically remained stable relative to inflation over the last decade. Sony now joins other tech giants in adjusting list prices to match component realities. The full impact on revenue will become clear in the next fiscal quarter.
