Voice actor Sam Witwer is tracking the vocal evolution of Darth Maul as the character takes center stage in the new series, Star Wars: Maul Shadow Lord. Speaking to polygon.com, Witwer explained how his performance has shifted to match the character's changing life stages.
Witwer, who also voiced Starkiller, built his performance using the original work of Ray Park and Peter Serafinowicz as foundations. He described the character's journey through several distinct vocal stages.
“It always changes a little bit. I think of the different eras as different versions of the character,” Witwer told polygon.com. He noted specific periods including the early Clone Wars, the 'Spider-Maul' era, and the later Rebels era.
A shift from madness to wisdom
The character's voice reflects his physical and mental state throughout the franchise. In earlier appearances, Witwer utilized a snarling, aggressive delivery to portray a traumatized and hate-filled entity.
In the Rebels series, the performance transitioned into a more collected and calm tone. This shift mirrors Maul's movement from a vengeful apprentice to a more composed figure.
In the new series, Maul operates as a crime lord on Janix. While the character remains vengeful, polygon.com reports that he now possesses a clear-headed wisdom absent after the death of Savage Opress.
Witwer noted that the vocal changes are intentional to highlight the character's growth. “He has a really interesting arc,” Witwer said. “Hopefully you'll be able to hear a few different aspects of his character through the vocal performance.”
The first four episodes of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord are currently streaming on Disney Plus. New episodes will continue to release every Monday through May 4.
