Roblox is launching restricted account types for children and teenagers following warnings from the Australian government regarding online grooming.
The gaming platform will introduce two new account tiers in June: 'Robments Kids' for users aged five to eight, and 'Roblox Select' for those aged nine to 15.
To implement these changes, the company will use age-verification technology, including facial checks, to assign users to the correct account.
'While no system is perfect, these age-adaptive accounts are designed to help remove the guesswork for parents and help align users' experiences with their age,' Roblox chief safety officer Matt Kaufman said in a statement.
Safety features and oversight
Roblox Kids users will only access games with 'minimal' or 'mild' maturity ratings, and the chat function will remain disabled by default.
Users in the Roblox Select tier will be limited to 'moderate' rated games. The platform plans to gradually introduce chat functions for this group, provided they include safeguards to limit interactions to family, friends, or peers of a similar age.
Australian Communications Minister Anika Wells met with Roblox representatives in February after expressing alarm over sexual and suicidal content on the platform.
'Even more disturbing are ongoing reports and concerns about children being approached and groomed by predators,' Ms. Wells said in a letter to the company.
Ms. Wells stated the government will monitor the rollout closely, adding, 'I welcome these steps towards stronger safety measures on their platform for under-16s.'
Roblox is currently exempt from Australia's social media ban for under-16s, which began in December 2025. However, the company remains subject to new codes regarding age-restricted material and must take action against the non-consensual sharing of intimate images and grooming.
Failure to comply with eSafety Commissioner regulations could result in fines of up to $49.5 million.
