Roblox announced a major platform overhaul on Monday that will restrict game access based on user age and verification status. Starting in June, players who do not complete an age check will be relegated to a limited selection of family-friendly titles.

The company is introducing two new account tiers: Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. Users verified as being between five and eight years old, or those who opt out of the verification process entirely, will be assigned to a Kids account. These accounts restrict access to games with "Minimal" or "Mild" content labels, and disable chat functions by default.

Roblox Select accounts will be reserved for users between the ages of nine and 15. This tier permits access to games with "Moderate" content maturity labels. Parents can also link their accounts to their child’s to manually set an age or block specific games until the child reaches 16.

Strengthening platform safety

This policy shift follows intense public scrutiny regarding child safety on the platform and several ongoing state lawsuits. Roblox has previously implemented features like improved parental controls and mandatory age checks for chat, claiming that more than 50 percent of its 144 million daily active users have already verified their identity.

To be eligible for the Kids or Select tiers, games must pass a strict three-step review process. Developers must verify their identity with government-issued IDs, enable two-factor authentication, and maintain a Roblox Plus subscription. Furthermore, games must undergo a "real-time multimodal moderation system" and eventually adopt International Age Rating Coalition standards.

Roblox spokesperson Juliet Chaitin-Lefcourt said the company does not have a specific timeline for how long the review process will take. "We want to be sure that we have enough information about each game from our real-time evaluation before it’s shown to Select and Kids accounts," Chaitin-Lefcourt said.

While the company could not confirm which specific games will be available under the new system, Chaitin-Lefcourt noted that Roblox expects the "majority" of favorite games to be ready once they complete the required review. The company plans to roll out these changes globally by the beginning of June.
