Roblox announced on Monday that it is restructuring its platform access by introducing two new account tiers, "Roblox Kids" and "Roblox Select," to ensure younger users interact only with age-appropriate content.

The update builds upon the mandatory age-verification technology the company rolled out globally in January. Going forward, the platform will use that verification data to automatically assign accounts to users based on their age range.

New safety tiers for minors

Under the new system, users aged five to nine will be placed into the "Roblox Kids" tier. Users aged nine to 15 will be assigned to "Roblox Select" accounts. Those 16 and older will remain on standard accounts, while full access to "Restricted Content"—which includes strong language or violent themes—will be reserved exclusively for users 18 and older.

Roblox stated that users who fail to complete the mandatory age check will see their access significantly curtailed. These unverified users will be limited to a small pool of games specifically rated for younger audiences.

"Roblox Kids" account holders will be restricted to titles with "Minimal" or "Mild" ratings. These categories cover games with only occasional mild violence or crude humor, effectively filtering out more intense user-generated experiences.

The global rollout of these account types is scheduled for early June. The company plans to provide a transition period to allow existing users sufficient time to complete the necessary age-verification process.

This move represents a tightening of the platform's safety protocols. By automating account assignments through verified data, Roblox aims to reduce the burden on parents to manually configure settings for every game or chat interaction on the platform.

The company has faced increasing pressure to police user interaction and content exposure more effectively. Since January, the platform has required all users to verify their age if they wish to access chat features. This latest update integrates that same verification framework directly into the core user experience, ensuring that account permissions remain tied to verifiable age data.
