Project Hail Mary box office success

Amazon MGM Studios is weighing the home release schedule for Project Hail Mary as the sci-fi epic continues to dominate the global box office. The film has grossed $510 million worldwide, outperforming previous studio hits and solidifying its status as a major franchise driver for the studio.

While Amazon MGM has not officially announced a digital release date, industry patterns suggest a window following its theatrical run. The film's massive success mirrors the trajectory of Creed 3, which moved from theaters to digital purchase in 29 days.

Streaming and physical media outlook

Large-scale sci-fi blockbusters often command longer theatrical windows to maximize revenue. For comparison, Dune: Part Two maintained a 46-day theatrical window, while Avatar: Fire and Ash stayed in theaters for 102 days.

Because Project Hail Mary remains at number two at the box office three weeks after its March 20 debut, analysts expect a prolonged theatrical run. This could delay the film's arrival on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video.

Previous Amazon MGM releases suggest a tiered rollout. The studio's recent release, Mercy, arrived on Prime Video approximately five weeks after its digital debut, while Creed 3 took two months to reach the streaming service.

Under a 2025 licensing agreement, Project Hall Mary may eventually migrate to Netflix. The deal allows Netflix to host Amazon-owned properties including the James Bond and Creed franchises.

Physical media collectors will likely face a longer wait. Online retailers have not yet opened pre-orders for Blu-ray or DVD, and the studio has historically separated digital and physical releases by several months.
