Playground Games confirmed on X that the next Fable installment is still scheduled to launch in autumn 202. The announcement directly addresses recent speculation that the studio might push the title back to avoid a direct confrontation with Grand Theft Auto 6.
"We're excited to welcome you to Albion in Autumn 2026!" the studio posted on April 13. The message followed an enthusiastic reaction from a fan regarding a recent Fable teaser.
These comments follow reports from journalist Jeff Grubb suggesting the game faced internal delays. Speaking on Giant Bomb's Game Mess Mornings, Grubb stated, "I've heard that Fable has been pushed internally. That doesn't mean that it's coming out next year. Apparently, they're still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of GTA 6."
Grubb suggested that a delay past the November 19 launch of GTA 6 could push Fable into December or even 2027. A December release would likely be avoided by both Playground Games and Xbox to maximize holiday sales and ensure eligibility for The Game Awards.
The GTA 6 release shadow
The November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is already influencing the 2026 release calendar. Developers often avoid launching major titles in the same window as Rockstar Games' massive franchise to prevent being overshadowed.
An autumn release window allows Playground Games to launch anywhere between September 22 and December 21. A late September launch provides a nearly two-month buffer before GTA 6 hits the market.
However, a late October or early November window presents much higher risks for a major launch. While the studio remains optimistic about its current timeline, the sheer scale of the GTA 6 release continues to loom over the industry's end-of-year plans.
