The classic RPG Pillars of Eternity has received an unexpected update more than a decade after its debut. Developers have officially added a turn-based mode to the game—a title originally built around real-time combat—fundamentally changing how players interact with its systems.

Long regarded as the spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate, Pillars of Eternity has always been defined by its "real-time with pause" combat. However, this style often left players feeling overwhelmed during complex encounters. The new mode transforms combat into a purely turn-based affair, granting players ample time to analyze the battlefield, plan spell trajectories, and fine-tune their positioning.

A Return to Tactical Depth

As noted in a review by PC Gamer, the turn-based mode is far more than a simple gimmick; it brings much-needed clarity to skills and stats originally balanced for real-time play. In this mode, players can more intuitively observe how Cast Time and Recovery Time impact the flow of battle.

This mechanical shift brings the experience closer to tabletop gaming. By allowing for precise control over every action, players can utilize crowd-control abilities more effectively, reducing the randomness of combat and increasing the success rate of their strategies. For fans of Divinity: Original Sin or Baldur's Gate 3, this mode makes the internal logic of Pillars of Eternity feel significantly more rigorous.

While this change may not appeal to every veteran player, it lowers the barrier to entry for newcomers. By converting complex real-time calculations into static, turn-based decisions, the game's rich narrative and world-building can be savored at a more measured pace. This long-overdue update not only extends the game’s lifespan but also provides a compelling new reason for players seeking traditional tactical challenges to dive in.
