Blizzard Entertainment is restructuring the hero ban system in Overwatch, a move that could potentially allow players to bypass current role-limit restrictions.
According to reports from PC Gamer, the upcoming changes to the banning mechanic might enable teams to target a fifth hero during the selection process.
The current system operates under strict role-limit rules. These rules dictate how many players can occupy specific roles, such as Tank, Damage, or Support, within a single match.
Expanding the banning phase
The proposed rework suggests a shift in how bans are applied during the pre-match phase. If the new system allows for a fifth ban, players could strategically target heroes regardless of the active role count.
PC Gamer notes that this change would fundamentally alter the meta-game. Players would no longer be restricted to banning within the constraints of the current role-based selection.
In the current Overwatch 2 format, players must adhere to a specific composition of one Tank, three Damage, and two Support heroes. The banning system currently functions within these parameters, often focusing on neutralizing specific threats within a specific role.
A fifth ban would introduce a variable that exists outside this fixed structure. This allows for a wildcard ban that does not necessarily correspond to a specific role's availability or the current player count in a category.
This modification targets the strategic depth of the game's banning phase. By allowing a ban that ignores the role-limit rule, Blizzard could change how players approach the drafting process.
The ability to target a hero outside of the standard role distribution would force teams to prepare for a wider variety of hero combinations. This shift would move the focus away from role-specific bans and toward broader strategic denial.
Under the existing framework, bans are often tethered to the specific roles being contested. A fifth ban would provide teams with an additional layer of utility to disrupt opponent compositions.
The developers have not yet provided a full breakdown of the implementation timeline. However, the focus of the rework is clearly on adjusting the mechanics of the banning phase to change how matches begin.
