Nintendo has officially announced the release of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, scheduled to launch on the Nintendo Switch on April 16, 2026.
Director Ryutaro Takahashi revealed that the development of the new title began around 2017. The project aims to rebuild the franchise from the ground up rather than simply adding new items to the existing formula.
"We've rebuilt Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream from the ground up and developed it as an all-new, reborn Tomodachi Life," Takahashi said in an interview with Nintendo.
Focus on user-generated content
Takahashi noted that the development team wanted to avoid a simple quest for quantity. He explained that the team decided to leverage user-generated content (UGC) to ensure long-term replayability.
"The concept of Tomodachi Life is to be 'the ultimate inside joke game' that can be enjoyed among people who are close to each other," Takahashi said. He added that combining developer-provided gameplay with player-created content should offer "infinite ways to enjoy the game."
Programming director Takaomi Ueno said the shift toward UGC was also driven by the expanded environment for Mii characters. Ueno noted that because characters can now move freely in a larger space, the team wanted to provide more ways to interact with them.
The development team includes veterans from several Nintendo franchises. Programming directors Takaomi Ueno and Naonori Ohnishi previously worked on Miitopia and Miitomo, while art director Daisuke Kageyama brings experience from Wii Sports Resort and nintendogs + cats.
Sound director Toru Minegishi, whose credits include The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon, is also handling the audio, including background music and Mii character voices.
