Streaming de Jellyfin en Nintendo Wii

Developer Fabien Millet has released WiiFin, an experimental homebrew client designed to transform the Nintendo Wii into a dedicated Jellyfin media player. The software enables users to browse and stream movies, TV shows, and music directly from a Jelly/fin server to the legacy console.

Built using C++, GRRLLIB, and MPlayer CE, the application provides a lightweight interface optimized for the Wii's hardware. Users can log in using standard credentials or via the QuickConnect feature, which allows for easy authentication from another device.

Features and limitations

WiiFin supports library browsing with cover art, detailed metadata viewing, and episode navigation for TV series. The client includes several user-friendly features, such as a 'Continue Watching' row, the ability to mark favorites, and multiple UI color themes.

Because the Wii lacks the processing power for modern high-bitrate files, the application relies on server-side transcoding. The Jellyfin server must transcode all video content to a compatible format before streaming it to the console. This design choice ensures playback stability but prevents direct-play functionality.

The software also supports audio-only streaming for music libraries and provides a player overlay for controlling volume, seeking, and subtitle tracks. Subtitles are rendered by having the server embed them directly into the video stream.

Developers noted that the project is currently in an experimental stage. Users can expect rough edges on real hardware, and certain features like 5.1 multi-channel audio are not supported, as the app is limited to stereo output.

For those using the Dolphin emulator, WiiFin can be run directly via command line. On physical hardware, the software is available as a .dol file for the Homebrew Channel or as an installable .wad for Wii and vWii systems. The project is licensed under GPLv3 and remains open for bug reports and feature requests.
