Fumi Games' upcoming shooter Mouse: PI For Hire is receiving high marks from critics for its unique blend of hardboiled detective work and violent combat. The title, published by PlaySide Studios, is scheduled for release on April 16, 2026.

PC Gamer described the title as "a slick, accomplished shooter that’s more than just an eye-grabbing art style." The reviewer went further, stating, "I’m surprised to tell you that Mouse: PI For Hire is the best shooter I’ve played in ages."

Set in a version of pre-war America where rodents have replaced humans, the game follows Jack Pepper, a private investigator voiced by Troy Baker. The narrative takes place in Mouseburg, a city facing political instability, rising xenophobia against shrews, and mysterious disappearances in Tinsel Ave.

Visuals and Gameplay

The game utilizes a distinct visual technique, mixing 3D Unity environments with 2D hand-drawn character and weapon sprites. Polygon noted the game is "full of cartoon charm and cheese puns."

PC Gamer highlighted the technical execution of this style, noting the "little details in everything from weapon reloading to (surprisingly detailed and horrorifying) death animations." While the reviewer compared the visual niche to Cuphead, they noted that "Fumi Games has definitely entered the chat."

Critics noted that while the social satire regarding capitalism and prejudice isn't entirely new, the game excels in its recreation of 1930s and 1940s Hollywood culture. The gameplay focuses on a fast-paced, multi-faceted combat system that maintains high readability despite the maximalist presentation.

Mouse: PI For Hire is expected to retail for $30/£25.
