In the classic shooter Half-Life, the scientists and security guards of Black Mesa are usually doomed to a grim fate. Recently, the modding team Team Clown released a mod titled 'Half-Life: Lemmings' that completely changes the destiny of these NPCs. The core mechanic of the mod allows players to recruit and lead up to 45 NPCs to safety.

The current release is a demo version covering chapters from 'Unforeseen Consequences' to 'Apprehension.' According to Team Clown's release notes, this accounts for roughly half of the original game's campaign. Once players reach the end of the demo, the system provides a tally of how many NPCs were successfully rescued and how many were lost.

Giving NPCs a Fighting Chance

To make the large-scale NPC following system function smoothly, Team Clown performed extensive refactoring of the game's logic. According to the mod's changelog, scientist NPCs can now pick up pistols to join the fight, assisting protagonist Gordon Freeman against alien threats. Furthermore, NPCs have been given entirely new animation sets, allowing them to perform complex actions like climbing and jumping.

The modders also meticulously adjusted the original maps to ensure that large groups of NPCs can navigate narrow areas without issue. A prime example is the scientist found in a trash bin early in the game: in the original, he would hide and never reappear, but now, players can successfully convince him to join their squad. Additionally, to accommodate the massive evacuation party, the developers even expanded the tram space in the 'On A Rail' chapter.

Although the mod is built on the often-criticized Half-Life: Source engine, the gameplay innovations have still captured the attention of the community. Team Clown emphasizes that this is not merely a simple stat tweak, but a deep customization of the game's flow, designed to let players experience the role of a true leader amidst the chaos of Black Mesa. The demo is currently available for download via major modding platforms.
