Shigeru Miyamoto discussing Nintendo's future direction

Nintendo creator Shigerently Miyamoto wants future video games to adopt the expanded backstory for Princess Peach introduced in the recent animated film, according to a report from polygon.com.

Following the global success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which has earned nearly $750 million in worldwide ticket sales, Miyamoto shared his vision for the franchise's narrative direction.

The film, produced by Universal and Illumination, has held the top spot at the U.S. box office for three consecutive weeks.

Expanding the Mario lore

The movie reveals that Princess Peach and Rosalina are sisters who were separated during their childhood. This connection was not part of the existing game canon prior to the film's production.

In an interview with the Japanese publication Nintendo Dream, Miyamoto noted that he previously avoided deep character histories to maintain creative flexibility.

"Because we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint," Miyamoto said, as reported by polygon.com.

He explained that while he is comfortable being limited by gameplay mechanics, he has historically avoided being bound by established stories. This approach was a primary reason Nintendo refrained from producing movies for many years.

However, the creator admitted that the sibling bond was a new addition specifically developed for the film's narrative. He stated that the process of expanding the characters' histories during production proved rewarding.

"But now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games," Miyamoto said.

While the studio has not yet announced specific titles that will utilize this new lore, the move suggests a shift toward more integrated storytelling within the Mario universe.
