Actor Lee Pace is leaning into a mix of calm calculation and survival instinct to bring the Grand Regent Thragg to life in season 4 of Prime Video's 'Invincible.'

In a video interview with Polygon, Pace described his method for establishing the character's presence despite limited screen time in the season's seventh episode.

"He carries some weight in this world, so I wanted to hit notes with the character that set him up for a big arc, set him up for a big journey," Pace told the outlet.

Showrunners Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa positioned the leader of the Viltrum Empire as a galaxy-level threat. To ensure the character met this expectation, Pace focused on providing versatile vocal performances for the production team.

"The best way I could think to do that was to be prepared to come into that recording booth, but give them a lot of options to work with so that they could tone the character the way they wanted to," Pace said.

A veteran of cosmic roles

Pace approached the role by studying the original comic book series to understand Thragg's violent history, including his bloody takeover of Viltrum.

He aimed to portray a leader who remains composed even when facing total annihilation. "I wanted to start playing him like a cool customer. He's very calm. He's very measured in what he's trying to do," Pace explained.

However, the character's motivations are driven by the dwindling numbers of the Viltrumite race. "Thragg is strategic and desperate in this story. The Viltrumites are down to a very few, and he’s tasked with either their annihilation or continuing the mission," Pace told Polygon.

Pace is no stranger to playing powerful figures in sci-fi epics. His previous roles include Ronan the Accuser in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and Emperor Brother Day in 'Foundation.'

While he noted similarities in ideology to his role as Ronan, Pace emphasized that the 'Invincible' narrative intends to dismantle Thragg. He described his character in 'Foundation' as a more 'messy human' with significant flaws.

The first seven episodes of 'Invincible' season 4 are currently streaming on Prime Video. The season finale arrives on April 22.
