A leaked YouTube review has prematurely revealed that Valve’s upcoming Steam Controller will carry a $99 price tag, according to reports from vice.com.

The pricing information surfaced after a tech YouTuber reportedly broke an embargo on reviews for the new Steam Machine peripheral. While the video was removed from the platform within a minute, users managed to capture screenshots and re-upload the footage.

Reddit users suggest the leak was accidental, though the presence of the hardware in the video makes the pricing details appear credible. However, the outlet noted that the rise of AI-generated content means the authenticity of the review should be treated with caution.

Mixed reactions to Valve's pricing

The $99 figure has divided the gaming community. Some players expressed sticker shock, while others argued the cost is justified by the device's advanced features.

On Reddit, one user responded to the leaked price by stating, “After looking at the review and the price, I think I’m good.”

Other commenters were more critical of the potential cost. One player noted that members of the Steam Machine and Steam Controller subreddits had previously argued for a price point of $60 or lower.

Another user shared their frustration regarding a potential price hike from previous hardware, writing, “If it’s a hundred I’m out. I paid $50 for my original steam controller and loved it. Was willing to spend $80 on impulse but now I’ll wait until my elite controller fails in some way.”

When compared to other high-end peripherals, the $99 price point sits in the middle of the market. The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con is reportedly priced at $99, while the PS5 DualSense Edge and Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 both retail for $199.

The leaked review also provided technical details about the hardware. The reviewer highlighted several drawbacks, specifically regarding the controller's build and battery.

“The rechargeable battery isn’t easily swappable. And the surface of the controller is just rough textured plastic. So it’s a little bit slippery if you have dry hands,” the reviewer stated.

Other features mentioned in the leak include a lack of an audio jack and the absence of customizable thumbsticks or hair triggers. The device is expected to connect to PCs via a wireless magnetic dongle that also serves as a charger.

Valve has not yet announced an official release date for the controller, though widespread reviews are expected to arrive shortly.
