Sony Pictures unveiled the title and premise for the next installment of the Jumanji franchise, titled 'Jumanji: Open World,' during CinemaCon 2026.
According to reports from Polygon, the film deviates from the series' traditional jungle setting. Set photos suggest the story moves into an urban, real-world environment.
Returning leads Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Dwayne Johnson will reprise their roles. The production also adds Danny DeVito, Burn Gorman, and Brittany O'Grady to the ensemble.
Chaos enters the real world
An unreleased trailer shown to CinemaCon attendees depicts the Jumanji game's chaos spilling into civilization. The footage shows natural disasters and escaped wildlife, including ostriches, terrorizing towns.
The film introduces a new mechanic where the four protagonists play different versions of their existing avatars. This shift adds a new layer of complexity to the group's survival mission.
Production details also reveal a character update for Johnson's Dr. Smolder Bravestone, who will now speak with a Spanish accent. The film will also feature a tribute to the late Robin Williams and include a nod to the original 1995 film's iconic dice.
While this marks the third film directed by Jake Kasdan, it is the fifth entry in the overall Jumanji brand. The studio moved the release date from December 11 to December 25, 2026.
Industry analysts suggest the delay aims to avoid direct competition with major blockbusters including 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Dune: Part Three.'
