Game developer IO Interactive announced on Wednesday that the highly anticipated 'Project 007' will not launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 as originally planned. While the game is still set for a May 27, 2026, release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the Switch 2 version has been pushed back to later that summer.
Addressing rumors of an "indefinite delay" circulating online, IO Interactive stated in an official announcement: "We are incredibly excited for players to experience this reimagined origin story for James Bond, and we are committed to delivering the best possible experience across all platforms." The company did not provide further details regarding the specific reasons for the delay of the Switch 2 version.
Porting Challenges Plague Nintendo's New Hardware
Although an official "later this summer" release sounds like a short wait, 'Project 007' is not the first title to hit a snag while porting to the Switch 2. Previously, 'Borderlands 4' was scheduled to arrive on the platform last fall, only to be delayed at the eleventh hour. Following that announcement, developer Gearbox Entertainment went silent for months before quietly confirming that development on that version had been indefinitely suspended, without citing specific technical bottlenecks.
Furthermore, 'Elden Ring,' which was a centerpiece of the Switch 2's initial reveal, remains missing in action. Although a playable demo was featured at Gamescom 2025, its performance at the time was lackluster. While recent reports suggest that the open-world action RPG has seen improvements in frame rate on the Switch 2, an official release date has yet to be announced.
These ongoing delays suggest that developers are facing significantly greater hardware optimization challenges than anticipated when bringing high-performance titles to Nintendo’s next-gen console. For the Switch 2, which relies heavily on third-party blockbusters to bolster its library, improving porting efficiency has become an urgent priority for developers.
