Godzilla is returning to the streets of New York City in the newly announced sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero. The film made its debut at CinemaCon 2026 on Tuesday, revealing a shift in setting from the original's post-war Japan to the Big Apple.
According to reports from Polygon, the first official trailer for the film will showcase the King of the Monsters "in a larger, much more menacing form" as he moves through New York. The footage reportedly includes a scene where the creature passes the Statue of Liberty.
This marks the monster's first appearance in New York since the 1998 film. The sequel's plot suggests a transition into the Cold War era, potentially involving tensions between Japan and U.S. forces.
A shift to the Cold War
While plot details remain scarce, Japanese actors Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe are expected to return as Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi. The new narrative may link Godzilla's transformation to United States involvement.
Speculation suggests the characters will face the challenge of strategizing with American forces during the height of the Cold War. The trailer is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. EDT.
Godzilla: Minus Zero arrives in North American theaters on Nov. 6, following a Japanese premiere three days earlier.
