The hit battle royale game Fortnite launched a series of skins this week inspired by AI memes, but the move has been met with immediate backlash from the community. According to data from the tracking site Fortnite.gg, the new 'Ballerina Cappuccina' skin has quickly become one of the lowest-rated outfits in the platform's history.

The skin’s design is rooted in the so-called 'Italian Brainrot' meme trend. This style of AI-generated content typically features surreal, jarring mashups of unrelated animals and objects, resulting in a visual aesthetic that many find deeply unsettling. In addition to 'Ballerina Cappuccina,' the collection includes a wooden-figure skin called 'Tung Tung Tung Sahur,' which features the same uncanny, AI-generated facial expressions.

AI Designs Spark Player Backlash

While Fortnite has previously embraced internet memes like Skibidi Toilet, this latest foray into AI-styled content has been widely rejected by players. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has long been a vocal proponent of integrating AI into the gaming industry. Sweeney has previously stated that AI labor could provide significant benefits to the company—a stance that stands in stark contrast to the growing movement among players to boycott AI-generated content.

Fortnite’s experiments with AI have not been smooth sailing. Last year, in-game assets generated by AI were criticized for their poor texture quality and distorted character animations. In one instance, an AI-driven Darth Vader character suffered from such severe logic errors in its voice lines that it was mocked by fans as sounding like a 'drunken sailor.'

Currently, this brand of 'brainrot' content is infiltrating the gaming space via digital culture channels. However, player feedback suggests that the strategy of translating AI-generated images directly into game characters is failing to resonate with the audience. With rumors circulating that Disney may further increase its investment in Epic Games, the developer faces a difficult challenge: balancing technical innovation with the aesthetic expectations of its player base.
