Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, the director of Final Fantasy XIV, is inviting developers to submit pitches for a potential single-player spin-off of the massive multiplayer online game. Speaking at a press conference during the Final Fantasy Fan Fest in Anaheim, Yoshida expressed interest in seeing concepts that could bring the FFXIV experience to a non-MMO audience.
While the director has considered the idea, he noted that the current development team is too vital to the main MMO to divert toward a separate project. According to a report from www.mirror.co.uk, Yoshida understands that a segment of the player base remains uninterested in the online component of the franchise.
“There are still a lot of people out there who look at an online Final Fantasy and they say an online Final Fantasy is not a Final Fantasy,” Yoshida told media at the event.
Challenges in development
Creating a standalone version presents a logistical hurdle regarding talent. Yoshida explained that the only group capable of delivering a high-quality single-player FFXIV is the team currently maintaining the live service.
He also noted that shifting resources could alienate the existing player base. "As for a spin-off, of course I would love to consider taking on that challenge, maybe build a smaller team within the Creative Business Unit 3," Yoshida said. He added that players might react negatively if the main game's development suffered as a result.
Despite these hurdles, the director is actively looking for outside talent or companies to spearhead such a project. He admitted that his invitation to developers is a mix of professional interest and humor.
“On the flip side, if there are people who are interested in creating a standalone FFXIV, if you have any friends or know of companies who really want to take on that challenge we would love to hear from them,” Yoshida said. “I’m half joking, half serious. If somebody is passionate enough to helm that project, we would love to hear from you.”
Square Enix is currently preparing for several upcoming releases, including the Evercold expansion slated for January 2027. The studio also recently announced an Evangelion crossover and a Nintendo Switch 2 port featuring Joy-Con mouse and keyboard support.
