Exclusive games remain top driver for console use despite declining interest
Gaming consoles and exclusive titles

Exclusive video games remain the primary reason players utilize gaming consoles, according to new market research from Circूनa. However, the importance of platform-exclusive titles is beginning to wane among the consumer base.

Data from Circana’s Q1 2026 survey reveals that 41 percent of respondents play on consoles specifically to access games not available on other platforms. This represents an eight percent decrease from the previous year, according to reporting from Kotaku.

While exclusives still hold the top spot, other motivations are closing the gap. The second most popular reason cited by players was that friends and family also play on consoles, suggesting social connectivity remains a vital pillar of the hardware ecosystem.

A shifting strategy for Sony and Microsoft

The decline in exclusivity-driven interest may explain why industry giants PlayStation and Xbox are reconsidering their recent trend of porting titles to PC and rival platforms. Kotaku reports that both companies appear to be returning to a more traditional exclusive-focused strategy.

This shift follows a period where titles like Halo, Gears of War, Spider-Man, and God of War were considered for or moved to other platforms. Recent sales data suggests that many of these ports have not performed exceptionally well, prompting a reevaluation of the multi-platform approach.

Mat Piscatella, senior director and video game industry advisor at Circana, noted that the importance of exclusives is a complex issue. Speaking on social media, Piscatella said, “It’s why the whole ‘how much do exclusives matter’ debate has been going on for years and years and why it’ll keep going. The real answer is that everything matters, but that’s not as much fun, I guess idk.”

Microsoft's leadership is also signaling a more cautious approach to platform expansion. Newly appointed Xbox boss Asha Sharma told Game File that the company is focused on long-term stability over rapid expansion.

“I want to make the right decision, not the fastest decision,” Sharma said when questioned about the future of Xbox exclusives.

Despite the waning influence of exclusives, third-party software continues to drive significant engagement. On the PlayStation 5, several of the highest-selling titles are third-party releases, reinforcing the idea that console owners are motivated by more than just platform-locked content.
