The developers behind the popular bullet-hell roguelike Enter the Gungeon have expressed skepticism regarding the current direction of the roguelike genre as they celebrate the game's 10th anniversary.
Speaking to PC Gamer, the creators noted that the genre has undergone significant changes due to its mainstream success. They suggested that the genre is currently undergoing a transformation that hides its original essence.
"We’re seeing it mutate to the version of itself that popularity obfuscates," the developers stated, according to a report by PC Gamer.
A decade of dungeon crawling
Since its release, Enter the Gungeon has become a staple of the roguelike community, known for its high difficulty and complex bullet patterns. The anniversary marks a decade of the title's influence on the genre's development.
While the genre has expanded to reach much larger audiences, the developers' comments suggest a concern that the core elements of the genre are being lost to more accessible, popularized mechanics. The outlet PC Gamer highlighted these reflections as part of a retrospective on the game's long-standing impact on the indie gaming scene.
